Slack wax

About 2% of crude oil is transformed into lubricating oils, and only a small percentage of that is refined into wax products. Slack Wax is formed from lubricating oils and is a less refined high oil product.

These high oils contain a relatively high oil content and are subsequently treated to produce more refined waxes. Most slack waxes do not meet FDA regulations for food packing. Based on its melting point, slack wax is graded from light to heavy.

Melting points range from 50-52 C for light grades to 53-55 C for heavy grades, with oil content ranging from 5.0 percent to 35 percent. Slack wax is the crude wax produced by chilling and solvent filter-pressing wax distillate. Actually, slack wax is a combination of oil and wax.

It is used as feedstock before being refined and blended to produce value-added petroleum wax products.
